Words of WisdomChange! Friend or Foe?October 2007 ![]() If any of you are like me, you love change. You love the excitement of the 'new' and the challenges that go along with it. Then there are some of you who dread it! You would rather pretend that change does not exist while staying in the comfort of your own paradigm. Then something happens that forces you to step outside the box that you have built around yourself and it frightens you, so you retreat back inside to the comfort of the norm. Unfortunately, for some, change is inevitable. It comes and goes with the seasons, it happens when the sun rises and sets and as the clock ticks by to let us know how old we are. One day we wake up and don't even recognize the person staring back at us in the mirror. So are you living to change or changing (adapting) to live? Living to change expands our horizons, spreads our wings and offers change as an option to grow, explore and learn about who you are and what you have to offer the world in terms of your self-worth. Are you staying in a dead end job or relationship because you are afraid of the alternative? Stepping outside our box is one of the most difficult things for some of us to do because we don't know how to handle change. Here are some steps to handle and encourage change. 1. Don't judge the situation. If you put judgment upon anything it then becomes rigid and inflexible. Sometimes we put our old thoughts and emotions into something we may not fully understand. When there is no judgment, there is opportunity to learn. 2. Stop looking through the pigeonhole of life. How can you be open-minded when looking through a small hole? Broaden your mind and step outside your box to have a look. It may not be as bad as you think when you look at it with a new perspective. As Khalil Gibran would say "How small is the world of a man, who puts his hands between his face and the earth and sees naught but the fine lines of his hands." 3. Be consciously aware of your behavior. As we become older, we become crystallized in our way of thinking and doing things. When someone you know comes to you with an idea that seems foreign to you, be conscious of your reaction. If you are going to criticize, bite your tongue. Reframe your behavior and ask what you can do to help. Getting involved in new projects may be just what the doc ordered to change your model of the world. 4. Remember that change is inevitable. Whether you like it or not, change is all around you. It molds and shapes our world. How boring would we be if we never had a new thought that changed our course in life? Live to change and enjoy the rewards!! It is our hope, at the 8th Side, that you find what you are looking for in terms of your hopes, dreams, aspirations and desires.
